Profiles in Cover-Up "Asides," Wall Street Journal 1/25/02
"Just as everyone expected, the Senate is moving to give New Jersey Democrat Bob Torricelli a free ethics pass. On her way out of office, Manhattan U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White declined to indict the Senator for taking Italian suits and Rolex watches, among other personal gifts, from a campaign contributor but felt there was enough evidence to forward to the Senate Ethics Committee.
Yet now senior Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch has pronounced Mr. Torricelli blameless without even looking at the evidence. 'I was pulling for Sen. Torricelli all along. There didn't seem to be anything to it,' says Mr. Hatch.
Mark it down as more evidence, if more were needed, that the world's greatest deliberative body protects its own."
